The best breathable work gloves for an Australian summer site are the least enclosing gloves that still provide the grip, coverage and certified protection the task requires. An open knit back or a porous palm coating may feel less clammy, but neither feature makes a glove suitable for sharp edges, liquids, chemicals, heat or every other hand hazard.
That distinction matters once radiant heat, physical work and sweat build through a shift. The aim is not to find the thinnest glove or the product with the biggest “cooling” claim. It is to work out how much of the hand needs a barrier, compare constructions at the required protection level, and trial the fit under normal summer work.
This guide gives supervisors and PPE buyers a practical way to do that. It also draws a firm line between glove comfort and the site’s wider heat controls.
Start with coverage, not a “summer” label
Before comparing liners and coatings, mark where the hazard can contact the hand. Is the exposure limited to the palm and fingers, or can it reach the knuckles, sides of the hand and wrist?
Then identify what the glove is meant to resist:
- sharp or burred edges;
- abrasion from masonry, timber or rough loads;
- oil, water, chemicals or other contaminants;
- hot surfaces or radiant heat;
- impacts to the back of the hand; or
- snagging and entanglement around moving equipment.
These hazards do not call for the same construction. A palm-coated knit may leave more fabric exposed to air, but that open area also provides less barrier coverage. A fully coated glove may be more enclosing, yet necessary where a compatible liquid barrier is part of the assessed control.
Where the exposure involves chemicals, heat, powered equipment or entanglement, select controls and PPE from the task assessment and directly relevant documentation. A generic “breathable nitrile work glove” description does not establish suitability for those hazards.
The hierarchy of controls still applies. Safe Work Australia’s risk-management guidance puts elimination ahead of substitution, isolation and engineering controls, with PPE used for risk that remains. A glove should not be asked to compensate for an avoidable hand contact.
What makes a work glove breathable?
A work glove may be described as breathable because it has uncoated knitted areas, a coating designed to let some air or water vapour pass, a liner intended to move moisture, or a combination of those features. The word alone does not identify a standard test result or tell you how the glove will feel during a specific task.
Four construction details are worth separating.
Uncoated area
Palm-dipped gloves commonly leave the back of the hand as exposed knit. Three-quarter dips cover more of the fingers and sides. A full dip encloses more of the glove.
More uncoated area can create a potential comfort advantage in hot conditions. It can also leave more of the hand without the coating’s grip, abrasion or barrier properties. The protected area must match the exposure.
Coating structure
Solid nitrile and foam or microfoam nitrile are not interchangeable terms. Some manufacturers promote specific open-pore or microfoam coatings as breathable, but that is a claim about that construction, not a property to assume across every nitrile glove.
Look for a clear manufacturer description and any supporting method or result. If the page only says “breathable”, treat it as a design claim to verify in a task trial, not a measured promise about hand temperature or sweat.
Liner construction
Fibre, knit density, thickness and seams affect bulk and how easily the fingers move. Gauge describes the knit construction; it is not a breathability grade and does not establish mechanical protection by itself.
A lightweight work glove can still carry useful mechanical ratings when supported by test evidence. Equally, a thin glove without the required rating can be the wrong choice for the edge being handled.
Fit
Fit affects both control and comfort. Check that the wearer can grip and handle the work without loose fingertips, palm bunching or pressure points.
Do not tell a whole crew to size up for summer. Issue the size that fits each worker, then confirm that it remains usable once hands are warm. Safe Work Australia says PPE must be suitable for the work, fit properly and be reasonably comfortable, and that workers should be consulted about PPE selection in its guidance on PPE duties.
Compare glove coverage against the actual exposure
The table below is a selection aid, not a ranking. “Potential airflow” is qualitative because the result depends on the exact knit, coating, fit, task and conditions.

Reduced coverage is not automatically safer in summer. If a fully coated glove is required, the answer may be shorter exposure periods, a safe cool-down arrangement or a different process, not an open-backed glove that leaves the hazard uncontrolled.
Read comfort and protection as separate evidence
Mechanical ratings answer mechanical questions. They do not certify a glove as breathable, cooling or suitable for hot-weather work.
For example, an EN 388 marking reports mechanical test results rather than airflow, sweat evaporation or the temperature inside the glove. Do not present a mechanical rating as a summer-comfort rating.
Use two evidence columns when comparing products:
- Required protection: the applicable standard and result, protected area, coating or barrier compatibility, grip needs, and any task-specific feature.
- Summer usability: coating coverage, liner and seam construction, available sizes, worker fit, and comfort observed during normal work.

Be cautious with absolutes such as “360-degree breathable”, “sweat-free” or “all-day cool”. Where a manufacturer names a technology, attribute the claim to that product and look for the test behind it. Do not transfer the claim to every glove with a similar-looking coating.
Run a summer glove trial without staging a hazard test
Specifications narrow the field. A controlled site trial shows whether the shortlisted glove stays workable on the real task.
Trial only during normal, authorised work. Never ask anyone to cut, stab, heat, soak or chemically expose a glove to “see what happens”, and never deliberately create a slip or loss-of-grip event. A standard such as ISO 13997 describes a controlled laboratory method; a crew trial is not a substitute. Keep required controls in place throughout.
Compare gloves with like-for-like required protection and coverage. If one option exposes more of the hand, it is not a fair comfort alternative unless the risk assessment permits that reduced coverage.
One-line trial record
Record one line for each worker and task combination:
- task, material and normal exposure conditions;
- required rating and area of coverage;
- glove model, size, liner and coating coverage;
- approximate wear period and site conditions;
- grip on the dry, wet or oily materials actually encountered;
- fingertip control, palm bunching and pressure points;
- comfort feedback at agreed points in the work period;
- when the glove was removed, where, and why;
- visible coating, seam or fibre wear; and
- keep, reject or trial again, with the reason.
Stop and reassess if the glove causes loss of control, rubbing, persistent skin discomfort, or repeated removal in an area where hand protection is required. A worker wanting to remove a glove is useful selection feedback, but it is not permission to leave the residual hazard exposed.
The trial produces purchasing evidence for that crew, task and set of conditions. It is not a certification result or proof that every wearer will get the same outcome. Recheck the choice when the material, process, weather, work rate or exposure changes.
Breathable work gloves are not a heat-management plan
Gloves cover a small part of the body, but they sit within the worker’s total heat load. Work rate, radiant heat, air movement, humidity, clothing, other PPE, duration and individual factors all affect heat risk.
WorkSafe Queensland’s heat-stress guidance notes that protective clothing can insulate the body and that impervious clothing can reduce evaporative heat loss. It does not supply a universal temperature at which a particular work glove becomes safe or unsafe.
Site controls may include:
- scheduling harder work for cooler periods where practicable;
- shade and ventilation;
- changing workload and work/rest arrangements;
- ready access to cool drinking water;
- acclimatisation planning, supervision and worker consultation; and
- a safe place and process for breaks and PPE removal.
The national Guide for managing the risks of working in heat recommends cooler, more breathable clothing where practicable, but also warns that removing PPE can introduce the hazard it was controlling. Required gloves should come off only under the site’s safe arrangement, away from the exposure they control.
Persistent irritation, broken skin or other symptoms should be reported through the workplace procedure and assessed appropriately. Do not assume sweat alone explains a skin problem, and do not use a glove article to diagnose one.

Among the gloves that pass that first gate, choose the least enclosing construction that preserves grip, fit and control during normal summer work. Trial it with the people doing the task, record why it stays or goes, and keep the site’s heat controls working around it.
That is the defensible summer choice: no unnecessary enclosure, no missing protection, and no promise that a glove can solve heat risk on its own.
